Himeji Castle

  • Himeji castle is  a hilltop castle located in Himeji.  It is considered the best preserved castle in Japan because unlike many other Japanese castles, Himeji Castle was never destroyed in wars, earthquakes or fires and remains in its original form today.  Also named 'Shirasagijo' (White Heron Castle), Himeji Castle was designated a national treasure 1931.
  • Some historians believe that over 25,000,000 man days were spent on the construction of the castle which included a middle and outer moat.

Matsumoto Castle

  • Matsumoto Castle was built in the 1580's and is also known as 'Crow castle' because of its black walls which appear to be spreading wings.  In 1872, the castle was put up for auction because the Japanese government thought that its cost of maintenance was too high and it provided too little military value. However, a local citizen saved it from the auctioneers and the castle was purchased by local citizens in 1878.
  • When viewed from the outside, the castle appears to have only three stories but in reality it has four. The hidden floor was used for concealing defences.

Kumamoto Castle

  •  Kumamoto castle was built in 1607 and is known for its curved stone walls which act as a defense against attackers. During the Seinan Rebellion, samurai forces led by Saigo Takamori marched to Kumamoto Castle, expecting a quick victory. However, a small band of government forces within the castle refused to give up and in the end, the castle was destroyed by fire and lay in ruins for many centuries.
  • The castle was rebuilt in 1960 and now serves as a museum.

Hirosaki Castle

  • Hirosaki castle was built in 1611 by the Tsugara clan and includes a three story tower, fortified moats, castle gates and some corner turrets.
  • The castle is located in Hirosaki Park, a public park of about 0.6 square kilometres.
  • The castle's original five-story keep was burnt down in 1627 when it was struck by lightning and was re-built in 1810.
  • Hirosaki Park is one of Japan's best cherry-blossom spots with an abundance of over 2500 trees.
  • A cherry blossom festival is held annually from April 23rd to May 5th, when blossoms are in bloom.
